Cartridges are usually sold in three different capacities: standard yield, high yield and extra high yield. The yield (also referred to as page yield) corresponds to the number of pages you’re expected to get from a given cartridge. Most high capacity or high yield cartridges include an “XL” after the cartridge part number, which indicates that they allow you to print a larger number of pages, since they are equipped with a bigger foam sponge.
Standard Yield Cartridge: A standard yield (also referred to as standard capacity) cartridge is the most common cartridge size available in the marketplace. It yields a smaller number of pages than the high yield or extra high yield, and is sold at a cheaper price. For users who don’t print very often, spending a bit less for a standard yield cartridge is sensible. High Yield Cartridge: A high yield (also referred to as high capacity) cartridge contains more ink or toner than a standard yield cartridge and as a result, offers considerably more prints. High yield cartridges are pricier than standard yield cartridges, however, they are often worth the extra money for print-heavy users in the long run.
Extra High Yield Cartridge: Not all cartridges have an extra high yield version. An extra high yield cartridge, just as its name suggests, contains even more ink and costs more than a high yield cartridge, making it a more suitable option in a document-heavy office setting.
Let’s see how Epson printer manufacturers name their cartridges. Epson ink cartridge sizes are named in a similar fashion as HP with “XL” after the cartridge part number indicating a high yield cartridge and “XXL” indicating an extra high yield cartridge. Below is an example of how Epson names its standard and high yield cartridges.

- High Yield: Epson 200XL, prints 500 pages
For another example, Epson 18 ink cartridges come in two varieties: the standard capacity and the “XL” high capacity. Despite the name, both the Epson Daisy 18 and the 18XL cartridges have exactly the same external dimensions. The main difference between the two lies in the amount of ink contained within, and therefore, the number of pages which can be printed before replacing each cartridge.
The standard capacity Epson Daisy T18 black cartridge contains 5ml of ink, providing an approximate yield of 175 pages, while the high capacity Epson T18XL black cartridge contains 11ml of ink, offering a page yield around 470 pages. It’s the same case with the cyan, magenta and yellow Epson 18 ink cartridges.
